With Turks, Jews, and Other Germans in Contemporary Art, Peter Chametzky presents a view of visual culture in Germany that leaves behind the usual suspects—those artists who dominate discussions of contemporary German art, including Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, and Rosemarie Trockel—and instead turns to those artists not as well known outside Germany, including Maziar Moradi, Hito Steyerl, and Tanya Ury. In this first book-length examination of Germany's multicultural art scene, Chametzky explores the work of more than thirty German artists who are (among other ethnicities) Turkish, Jewish, Arab, Asian, Iranian, Sinti and Roma, Balkan, and Afro-German.

About the event:
At basis, in addition to reading sections of the book, Peter Chametzky will discuss it in conversation with noted German art critic Dorothee Baer-Bogenschütz and respond to questions and comments from the audience. Books will be on sale and the author will be happy to sign them.
The talk will be in German, the reading will be in English. Discussion can be held in English or German.

Peter Chametzky is Professor of Art History at the University of South Carolina.
In addition to this book, he is the author of Objects as History in Twentieth-Century German Art: Beckmann to Beuys (University of California Press, 2010). He has published articles in such journals as Art in America, The Art Bulletin,The Massachusetts Review, Modern Intellectual History, and Oxford Art Journal. Exhibition catalogue essays for the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid and Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt aM are forthcoming in 2022.

Dorothee Baer-Bogenschütz is an art historian and journalist. She works as a freelance author and art critic for art magazines and daily newspapers, including the Frankfurter Rundschau. She is also editor of the KUNSTZEITUNG and the Informationsdienst KUNST, has published numerous articles in art books, and is a member of the advisory board of the art KARLSRUHE art fair.
